Our Mission
Technology advances in an astonishing rate in the 21st century. It offers comfort and convenience. However, it only belongs to the material aspect of human life and can hinder the development of spirituality.
Mundane life skills and spirituality are two essential elements of human lives. They should be balanced. Materialism, wars, and destructive disasters are inevitable when the development of technology outweighs the growth of humanity.
The ancient saying: “Above all other beings, human beings possess the most advanced spirit.” We need to remember that the soul is the real self and master of the body.
The Society wishes to promote the concept that we are all one family in this world to realize the dream of world peace.
Our Charity
“Spiritual Calligraphy and painting”, a practice inherited from the unique spiritual connection of Taoism, helps comfort the soul and dispel doubts. In 1950, Dr. Shou-Chi Lee took over from his father Judge Wan-Cheng Lee the charity effort based on spiritual calligraphy and painting originally practiced at the Chongqing Taoist Temple, and he founded in Taiwan a society under the same name. In June, 1972, the Society of Spiritual Calligraphy and Painting was approved as a nonprofit organization by the Taipei Board of Education. In time, Dr. Shih-Pei Lee succeeded his father in April, 1990 and has, by combining the “celestial language” with the art of spiritual calligraphy and painting, been leading a group of volunteers in selfless and dedicated service ever since. For 66 years, the Society has distributed money from its charity sales and fundraising for disaster relief, winter aid, scholarships and, other social benefits. For this, it has won the respect and praises of the government and local communities.
Gifted and well endowed, Dr. Shih-Pei Lee the Grandmaster was trained in meditation and profound philosophy in early childhood. His Christian baptism in Suzhou in 1947 and ancestral religious concept enabled him to draw flexibly on the strengths of various religions and promote religious beliefs as a science. Dr. Shih-Pei Lee graduated from the Taipei National Defense Medical Center in 1963. In 1980, he was sent to the New York Rehabilitation Center and Ohio Rehabilitation Center as a government-sponsored exchanged scholar. He returned to Taiwan as a clinical professor and department chair at his alma mater, and later became Director of Acupuncture and Rehabilitation at the Tri-service General Hospital (TSGH) and President of Hualien General Hospital. Dr. Lee has been widely recognized through his medical career spanning four decades. He has devoted his spare time to the Society and its painting creations, transcribing the heavenly messages he received into works of art, in sound, words, poetry, calligraphy, and paintings. Since 1985, the Society has been invited to over 20 countries in Europe and Asia to promote Taoism by way of calligraphy and painting. In March, 2000, Dr. Lee founded a charity foundation, also under the name of Society of Spiritual Calligraphy and Painting, which was officially approved by the U.S. IRS as a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization in July, 2003.
For six decades the Society of Spiritual Calligraphy and Painting has undertaken its mission to convey God’s kindness from Heaven and spread Taoism through his brush and charitable acts. More than 100,000 pieces of artwork, both calligraphy and painting, have been produced throughout the Society’s existence. And more than 1 million devoted men and women in the world have benefited from its service.
